Light No Fire – What We Know So Far

The studio behind the cult hit No Man’s Sky, Hello Games, is back with a bold new project: Light No Fire. This upcoming survival-adventure game shifts from the stars to a single sprawling world — and promises to redefine scale, exploration and community in open-world gaming.

What is it?

Light No Fire is described as an “adventure, building, survival and exploration together” game, set on a fantasy planet the size of Earth. Steam StoreGamesRadar

Rather than hopping between countless procedurally generated planets (as in No Man’s Sky), users will explore one massive, fully traversable planet with a mix of survival, role-playing, and sandbox building elements. GamesRadar

Developer & studio context

Hello Games gained notoriety for No Man’s Sky — a title that launched rough but evolved into a well-regarded open-world space-exploration game. With Light No Fire, the studio has leveraged much of its technology evolution (including terrain, procedural generation, multiplayer systems) to push into new territory. PC Gamer

Key features and game-world scale

  • Earth-sized planet: The game world is said to be roughly the size of Earth, exploring mountains, oceans and seemingly limitless terrain. GamesRadar

  • Real oceans and big traversal: According to studio head Sean Murray, there will be “real oceans to traverse, needing large boats and crews”. PC Gamer

  • Procedural + handcrafted blend: While the world is procedural in many respects, the studio emphasizes variety in biomes, unique enemies/resources, and a dense world full of discovery. GamesRadar

  • Multiplayer + persistent building: Players can build persistent structures/communities; you can go solo or join others. Communities and settlements may be shared/discovered by other players. GamesRadar

  • Fantasy setting: Unlike the purely sci-fi past of the studio, this game merges fantasy elements (mythical creatures, flying beasts, mount usage) with sandbox survival. GamesRadar

Story and tone

While specific narrative details remain light, the game’s ambition is less about you being the “hero” and more about exploration and survival in a world thick with mystery and possibility. Steam Store The tone appears to be one of wonder, risk, and community more than linear story beats (at least based on what’s been revealed so far).

Platforms & release window

  • A Steam page is live, confirming a PC version. GamesRadar

  • Console platforms (PS5, Xbox Series X) are not yet confirmed. GamesRadar

  • No firm release date yet. Many speculate a 2026 launch. GamesRadar

  • Because of the scale, it appears still in active development and we should temper expectations for a near-term release.

Why it matters

For several reasons this title is significant:

  • It signals Hello Games shifting from a multi-planet space sandbox to a fantasy/survival sandbox of a single world — a major conceptual change.

  • The ambition in scale (Earth-sized planet, oceans, persistent communities) could push open-world survival/building games forward.

  • The multiplayer/persistent building angle means this could evolve into a long-term shared world experience.

  • For fans of No Man’s Sky, this is a developer with proven commitment to post-launch evolution and listening to community feedback — giving hope that Light No Fire could launch more polished and with strong ongoing support.

What we still don’t know

  • Exact release date and platforms beyond PC.

  • Full depth of gameplay systems: crafting, progression, story quests, end-game content.

  • How big the multiplayer / persistent world will be (number of players, server size/structure).

  • Pricing, business model, support/updates plan.

  • How console performance will be handled (if at all).

Light No Fire is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious sandbox adventure games on the horizon. With an Earth-sized fantasy world, multiplayer persistent building, and a developer known for iterating and improving long-term, this could become a cornerstone title for fans of survival, exploration and open-world freedom. Stay tuned — the journey across oceans, atop mountains and into the unknown is just beginning.
